Here’s the second and final part to our “Tall Grass Field” level. Dan continues his touch-up work on the level, although this level has been done for some time now we have been going through the game during our “balance and polish” stage and continue to make our final changes.

Enjoy!

Uh is it possible that you’ll post some in game stuff soon? (or will there be no gameplay stuff around here?)

    Hey guys!

I’ve been following this blog for a while and I just felt like leaving a small note of worshiping (since everyone else is already worshiping gta today and I hate to be a sheep XD)

Its awesome to follow this blog and I’m really glad u guys chose to share this stuff with us. Its really interesting to see Dan draw and animate. You really manage to get so much action out of these characters. One of my teachers always used to say, the best animators are lazy animators, they are able to achieve maximal result with minimal effort, I think you are one of those animators, and yes I mean the maximal result part, not the lazy part of course..(can’t judge on that :P all tho I doubt it)

Also I think this game means a lot to the flash development, it really helps it mature and become more and more interesting as a tool. I can’t wait to see more and keep up the good work!

You are fantastic at drawing and brilliant at animating ! Do you use the brush tool ? If so how do you erase so neatly ? Also, is the game coded in Actionscript ?

Dan, your lack of mistakes makes me feel like a failure. I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to stop it.

Wow, that was some fantastic animating! I wish I could draw as well as that. I assume that this was done using a screen tablet?

So what’s the export process here to get your stuff into the game? Can the game engine render vector art or do you have an exporter that handles converting to bitmaps? I’m not asking for trade secrets here, just trying to wrap my head around doing large backgrounds like this without using tiles like a classic arcade game.

SiW actually asks a pretty good question. I assume that you are animating in Flash, but how do you make the transition over to XNA and the Xbox Live platform?

you know, i wish i could answer all that stuff but it delves too far into development information/trade secret mumbojumbo. in all honesty, i’m not even 100% sure how it all works since it is very complex. sorry guys!!!!

That’s okay, I understand. I’m just interested because I am a coder and know some of the technical hurdles.

I love your work Dan, been watching it since Koy and the Orangeyfats. It’s awesome to see you guys succeed.

I know that there may be some “trade secrets,” as previously mentioned, but is there really zero information that you could provide on how you moved flash graphics into the game?

    - Did you use an internal solution, third party app, etc?
    - What is the final format of the art when it goes into the game?
    - How are maps arranged in the game engine (this question is probably stretching it, I know :) )… Are they tiled, or are they stored in a different format capable of containing a massive amount of space?

I love your work and and intrigued by how you were able to get it into the game! If anyone else may know, or has any ideas, I would love to hear them!
